The Law of Eschatological Convergence
Why are some conflicts impossible to settle by negotiation? When the end-times narratives of several religious traditions converge on the same place or event, conflict there becomes structurally unmanageable by political means — because the actors are optimising for theological fulfilment rather than political outcomes.
The mechanism
Negotiation assumes both sides prefer a settlement to continued conflict. Remove that assumption and every diplomatic instrument stops working, not because it is applied badly but because it addresses a payoff nobody is maximising.
Where a location carries eschatological weight for more than one tradition, three things follow. Compromise is not a partial win but a theological failure, which means the negotiator who accepts it loses standing at home. Time pressure inverts: waiting is not costly if the timeline is providential. And the constituency that matters is not the population but the interpretation.
The practical consequence is that mediators keep offering rational settlements to parties for whom acceptance is the worst available outcome — and then read the refusals as bad faith or as a failure of creativity, which produces another round of the same.
A worked example
Test any intractable dispute with a single question: what would each side have to tell its own core constituency to sell the proposed settlement?
Where the answer is a difficult but sayable sentence about trade-offs, the conflict is political and negotiable, however violent.
Where the answer requires the leadership to say that a commitment held as non-negotiable by the tradition itself is now negotiable, no settlement is available at any price — and the offer of one weakens whoever entertains it.
Now add the second and third tradition with claims on the same square mile. Every settlement acceptable to one is disqualifying for another, and the mediator's room to manoeuvre is not small. It is empty.
What would prove this wrong
A conflict with genuine multi-tradition eschatological convergence that is nonetheless durably settled by ordinary political negotiation, with the settlement surviving a change of leadership on each side.
